How to Get Customers to Put More in their Shopping Cart

20 December 2007

The goal of any good business, whether it’s a store on Main Street or an eCommerce website, is to make money. One way of doing that is to regularly increase the number of customers that are making purchases from you. However, a more effective way of doing it is to get the customers who are already loyal to you to add more items to their shopping cart each time that they spend money with you.

One of the best ways of doing that is to offer promotions. Targeted online advertising is getting more and more important to this part of business so try to find eCommerce software that will let you keep track of what your customers are buying. You can then recommend other similar products to them, which they are likely to purchase. Another great promotional tool is to offer a bonus product to be sent as a “free gift” to someone else when they make a purchase. So you can say, “buy this CD and we’ll send a second one as a free gift to any friend you’d like”. They’ll have to pay shipping of course and you’ll make money off of the CD they might not otherwise have bought.

The main thing to remember is that people spend more when they’re buying on impulse. Regularly rotate the items that are advertised on your home page so your customers will see more of what there is to buy. And make sure that your shopping cart functions are always working so they can easily buy what they put in those carts!
